Historic Roots with Global Pursuits - Houston Academy for International Studies Early College High School

Houston Academy for International Studies (HAIS) is a vibrant Early College Magnet High School located in the historic former J. Will Jones Elementary building at 1810 Stuart Street in Midtown Houston.

HAIS Milestones
Founded in August 2006, HAIS was established through a partnership between Houston ISD, Houston Community College, and the Asia Society. Its goal: to prepare students as global citizens while providing a clear pathway from high school to college.

By fall 2009, HAIS moved into the former J. Will Jones Elementary campus—originally opened as Charlotte Allen Elementary in 1907 and renamed in 1956 to honor music educator J. Will Jones.

Early College & Academic Success
HAIS integrates Houston Community College coursework into the high school curriculum, requiring students to demonstrate college-level mastery. Many graduates earn both a high school diploma and an Associate Degree, or accumulate significant transferable college credit, leaving HAIS ready to enter university. The school provides strong support for students and families to navigate college admissions and ensure post-secondary success.

The Legacy of Our Campus
Charlotte Allen Elementary opened in 1907, serving families from Midtown and the Third Ward.

In 1956, it was renamed J. Will Jones Elementary, honoring the man who served as HISD’s music supervisor from 1926 to 1942 and developed the district's music curriculum.

The elementary school closed in May 2009, and by the 2009–2010 school year, the building was revitalized as the home of HAIS.

By occupying a building deeply rooted in Houston’s educational history, HAIS blends tradition with innovation—honoring its heritage while empowering students to pursue global opportunities and college success.
